Make a Difference in Columbus with the Give Her Hope Campaign

The YMCA of Central Ohio is in the middle of the Give Her Hope Campaign – an effort to raise $60,000 in 60 days to support 200 women experiencing homelessness in Columbus. I previously worked in a homelessness prevention program connected to the YMCA Family Shelter and I could personally tell you numerous stories of families who have worked so hard to fight and to overcome homelessness, so this cause is extra special to me!

Having personally talked with so many women and families who have experienced or on the verge of homelessness, I began to realize that there but for the grace of God go I. So many stories began with a combination of illness, lay offs, car trouble and/or lack of family support that swell into the perfect storm. We are fortunate in Columbus to have so many resources for families in need and one of those is the temporary shelter provided by the YMCA Family Center.

A few facts provided by the YMCA of Central Ohio:

  • Right now, on an average night, 250 women, including 30 expectant mothers, are spending the night in shelter at the YMCA’s Van Buren Center.
  • Over 227 children live in the shelter, and studies show even a small stay in a homeless shelter brands these children for the rest of their lives.
  • Infant mortality increases by 200% when a child is born in a shelter program.

For a donation of just $10, you will receive a Bracelet of Hope as a reminder of the difference you’re making for the women and families in the shelter. 100% of every dollar given goes toward helping women experiencing homelessness in our community!
