Cirque du Soleil: Ovo

Disclaimer: I received two tickets to Cirque du Soleil Ovo in exchange for a review on my blog.

Cirque du Soleil never fails to entertain! Ovo is a story about the life of bugs and the performances and entertainment revolve around this theme! The costumes are bright and fun and the music is lively with Brazilian influences.

Jaden and I had the opportunity to visit behind the scenes at The Schottenstein Center as several of the acts rehearsed the day of the opening show in Columbus.

We saw the Butterflies on the duo straps and the Male Spider on the slack wire rehearsing their acts:

Cirque du Soleil is based in Montreal and 100 people work on the tour representing 20 countries! Performers are former circus performers, Olympic gymnasts, world champion athletes and the like! When you see the feats performed at the show, you will be amazed at what people can do with their bodies. If you’re like me, you might also have thoughts like, “Wow, I really need to start lifting weights!”

The costumes are amazing and each performer’s costume is handmade. We learned that each performer has 2-3 costumes and each costume takes 40 hours to make! To top it off, there are 50 performers! I haven’t done the math on that, but that is a LOT of hours of work!

Here are the Butterflies in the live performance:

And the Male Spider on the slack wire:

The show is 2 hours long with a 20 minute intermission in the middle. The music is all performed live, which is just amazing. The leader of the band travels with his family, which includes his wife and 1.5 yr old! They travel from city to city, baby-proofing each hotel room as they go! And I thought my life with littles was challenging! 🙂

There are 10 acts with colorful characters who perform in between: bugs who entertain, fall in love and engage the audience in the process!

Let’s talk about Foot Jugglers. First of all, that’s a thing. Second of all, it was my husband’s favorite act of the show! It was amazing that they could juggle these round “kiwis” with their feet, perfectly in sync with each other. Just amazing. (I’m going to say amazing a lot, be forewarned.) Also, you can buy your very own “kiwi” at the souvenir counter. . . I’m thinking Father’s Day gift for hubby?!

The crickets on the Trampo Wall were probably my favorite act, which came towards the very end. The performers scaled the wall with the help of a trampoline! It looked like so much fun!

My husband and I saw the show as a date night, but the show is kid-friendly. There were plenty of kids there on opening night! My personal thought is that I would take my 5 year old, but my 2 year old would have trouble sitting there for 2 hours. The show is non-stop action and it is really captivating, so I think my 5 year old would have been riveted. This is just my own opinion for my own children – I definitely saw children younger than 5 there at the show!

I do feel like I should add that there are a few sexual innuendos between the bugs (I know, that sounds weird! 😉 ) . It’s probably something my 5 year old wouldn’t notice and not something your 10 year old hasn’t seen on a TV commercial. But I didn’t want anyone coming back and saying, “You told me it was kid friendly and now my child is scarred for life.” So there. You have that.

The Details: Ovo: Cirque du Soleil

3 Places I Love to Take My Kids in Columbus: Jaclyn Davis

Each month I will be featuring a local parent who will tell us about three places they love to take their kids in Columbus! Thanks to Jaclyn for sharing 3 of her favorites with us this month!

1. Naturally Curious Kids

This isn’t your average toy store. Once you walk in, your imagination and sense of wonder are fully invoked. On the first level is the sweetest little play house for your kids to play in while you are looking around. There are also other little play areas set up, ready to be played with and tested out. The store is arranged by age; starting with 0-2 on the first floor and ending with older kids/adults on the second level. Our favorite time to go is on Wednesday mornings for their Story/Craft time from 11:30 AM -12:00 PM.

2. CATCO/CATCO is Kids

Columbus is loaded with options for introducing your kids to preforming arts. Going to the theater has become one of our favorite outings. One theater specifically we frequent often is CATCO/CATCO is Kids. They perform at the Columbus Performing Arts Center. They provide shows for all ages and at different lengths. Our two favorite this year have been Cowgirls Don’t Ride Zebras and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The theater is small and intimate, which is perfect for little ones. CATCO does an amazing job not only supplying an outlet for those who want to preform but also for the children who enjoy attending.

3. Home Depot Kids Workshops

My girls love the first Saturday of the month! Home depot offers a different project monthly that is perfect for little hands, with the help of an adult. We use this opportunity as a Daddy date. At your first visit you receive a workshop apron, just like the employees wear. You’ll also receive a commemorative pin for that month’s project and a certificate of achievement. Each following workshop you attend, you collect the commemorative pins and add them to your apron.  They’ve made great projects, including picture ornaments, monster trucks, boats, picture frames and airplanes.

Hi! I’m Jaclyn over on Instagram @sew_many_stitches. I’m a full time working mama to 2 sweet little girls. I love taking adventures with my husband and our cuties. Our tastes are all quite eclectic so you will find us anywhere between the theater, enjoying a ballet to digging in the mud finding worms.  When not around town with my girls, I am sharing my passion for sewing. I enjoy teaching private and group lessons for garment sewing and quilting. I’m on facebook at Sew Many Stitches. My passion for sewing is my second obsession behind my girls. I love Columbus for all the amazing opportunities it gives so many while still being a hometown feeling city!
