10 Things to do at Home with the Kids this Weekend:

1. Learning with Miss Allie

This local childcare provider has started her own YouTube channel to keep in touch with her daycare kids during quarantine, but hey, anyone can benefit from her stories, games and recipes! This story is a bedtime story Little One’s Bedtime!

 

2. Piccadilly Story Time

Piccadilly Play Cafe is getting in on the virtual story time game with a reading of The Big Hungry Bear!

3. Glassblowing at Hocking Hills

This is a good one for the older kids who might be interested in watching this video from Exploring Hocking Hills at Jack Pine Studio as they make a vase by glass blowing.

4. Storytime Series with My Bookworm Box

Missing your swim lessons? Try out some of these exercises that are inspired by swimming!

8. Make Wind Spinners with Columbus Recreation and Parks

Thanks to CRPD for a fun craft for kids: making Wind Spinners!

9. Creative Art Bar Hilliard

Looking for a craft to do at home? Creative Art Bar Hilliard hosts a “Slime Day” with instructions on how to make slime! You need standard school glue, clear glue and liquid starch. You can also use food coloring. glitter and other add ins as you desire.

 

10. Participate in Virtual Opening Day at Ohio Village

Ohio Village is celebrating their traditional Memorial Day Weekend Opening with a Virtual Opening Day on Saturday, May 23! Highlights include Craft and activity ideas for kids like a kazoo band, making a paper hat, meeting Ohio Village Residents through video, a bluegrass concert, singalong and much more!

1. Join Westerville Public Library for an Online Storytime

Westerville Public Library has family storytimes, baby story times, toddler story times, and more on their YouTube page! There are LOTS of videos to choose from here! There are stories, songs, activities and more!

 

2. Experience Virtual Recreation with Westerville Rec Center

Westerville Rec Center has put together a page of resources for virtual recreation! There are classes you can take in real time, videos to watch, art projects, and list of at home games and DIY projects for families and kids!

 

3. Watch a Virtual Story Time from the Underground Railroad Museum

The Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, Ohio is doing a weekly story time. This one features the book Frederick Douglass and is about 10 minutes long.

 

4. See Aurora Play with her Cub at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Remember when Aurora was the polar bear baby? Now she’s a mama! Aurora has a 5 month old cub named Kulu. Watch a short video of them playing together on Mother’s Day at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium! 

 

5. Listen to a story from Ariel of Paulette’s Princess Parties

Watch Ariel read a story and talk to the listeners about all things Princess!

 

6. Check in with the Cincinnati Zoo Home Safari

Home Safari continues and this video features Henry the Orangutan! After watching click over to the Home Safari Resources Page and school down to Orangutan for instructions on how to make your own Orangutan Maze at home! 

 

7. Sing-a-long with Michael Frogman of Grange Insurance Audubon Center

Kids can sing or dance along these nature themed songs like I Love Trees, Down By The Bay and the Scat Song!

 

8. Watch a Parade of Art Cars

Art Cars are cars that are elaborately decorated and they often pop up at car shows and local festivals like Summer Jam West. Summer Jam West coordinated a neighborhood parade of Art Cars through the Hilltop last week!

 

9. Play Victorian-era Parlor Games from Ohio History Center 

Check out this PDF from Ohio History Center that explains various games that were played during the Victorian Era! These are some pretty simple games you can play with little to no props. Did you know the game of Telephone used to be called Russian Scandal?? Check out this coloring book of Victorian Dresses!

10. Free ABC Printables from Melissa and Doug

This one is not Ohio related, but these ABC printable coloring pages look like a lot of fun for preschoolers and toddlers!

2. Socially Distanced Carmen Ohio

Watch members of the Ohio State Marching band come together through the internet to play Carmen Ohio! OH-IO!

 

3. Random Acts of Art from Lindsay Gallery

Gallery Hop has gone virtual and you can check out one piece of art from each artist at Lindsay Gallery in the Short North on this slide show. Click the link above.

 

4. Watch Supervolcanoes courtesy of SciDome Planetarium at The Works

The Works in Newark is offering their SciDome Planetarium shows online! You can learn about Supervolcanes in this 20-ish minute video. Make it a science lesson with one of these volcano kits for kids!

 

5. Get Outside with Ohio State Parks

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has given us a little inspiration in 30 ways to spend time outdoors in May – or anytime, really! These ideas can be used any day of any month as far as I’m concerned! If your kids like to get outside, check out the book Sticks and Stones: A Kid’s Guide to Building and Exploring in the Great Outdoors by local author, Melissa 

6. Watch a BUG Show Online with BUGMAN Education and Science Shows

Join the Bugman for an educational Bug Show! Skip ahead to minute 9 for the actual start of the show! This show is about an hour long!

 

7. Virtual Adventures: Playwriting with CATCO is Kids

Have kids who are interested in theater? CATCO is kids is offering some playwriting lessons online! There are already a couple of lessons online, this is the first one!

 

8. Rent a Board Game from Kingmakers

Getting bored of your games? Haha – pun not intended! Try renting out a new game from Kingmakers in the Short North! 

9. Join the COSI Science Festival Online this Week and Weekend

COSI’s Science Fest goes online this year with many virtual events you can watch from your laptop!
