It goes without saying that these local donut shops are kid-tested and approved! 😉 (Has a kid ever met a donut he didn’t approve of?) I’ll be honest, I’ve only recently cared about donuts. I think that’s because, for a long time, my experience was limited to chains. Only in the past few years have I had some donuts that have caused me to think about them later and even crave them! There are so MANY great choices for donuts these days (I envision a Part 2 in the not-to-distant future), but here are 5 that have received our two thumbs up!
1. DK Diner, Grandview Heights
1715 W 3rd Ave, Columbus, OH 43212, 614-488-5160
DK Diner was maker of the first donut I craved – the sour cream donut! 😋 Chocolate is really good, too! Of course, my kids always pick the donuts with the sprinkles. If you didn’t know, DK stands for Donut Kitchen and donuts were the first and only thing sold at the beginning of DK diner!
2. Destination Donuts, Downtown
59 Spruce St., Columbus OH 43215, 614-525-0878
Destination Donut has some really fun options! How about White Chocolate Pretzel and Salty Caramel or Aztec Chocolate and Spiced Pepitas? (Jaden chose Vanilla. Haha.) These are a bit more pricey than the others listed here so it’s a decadent treat! Flavors change daily and besides the stall at North Market, they can also be found at these locations!
3. Schneider’s Bakery, Westerville
Schneider’s is a long standing Westerville tradition, opening at 1:30 AM most days for your donut cravings! Only here can you get a 10″ Celebration Donut (think of this as a replacement to the birthday cake!) Cash or check only here and most of the donuts are just $.75 or $.85!
4. Amy’s Donuts, West Side
There are so many choices at Amy’s Donuts it can almost be overwhelming! For instance trying choosing 18 different donuts on a Saturday morning at 8:45 AM when there’s a line nearly out the door waiting behind you! No pressure! I’m not trying to scare you off because you should definitely try these if you haven’t already! SO good! I love the old fashioned varieties here and, of course, my kids love the crazy candy combinations! You can also schedule a tour, which is a fun outing with the kids! Spoiler Alert: they get to decorate their own donuts at the end! 😉
5. Jolly Pirate Donuts, Grove City
3118 Southwest Blvd., Grove City, OH 43123, 614-871-1070
Jolly Pirate is your classic donut shop! There are two locations in the Columbus area: Grove City and Reynoldsburg. The Grove City location (where these pictures were taken) closed briefly but is back open under new ownership! There are a lot of fancy donut shops to choose from, but if you want a classic donut and coffee experience this is it! No frills, good donuts!

I need to try some of these donut shops. Thanks for posting! Buckeye Donuts on High St by OSU campus has delicious donuts, and some great flavor options. They also have donuts with sprinkles, which is a necessity for my daughter when eating donuts.
