When you think of museums in Columbus, some classics like COSI or the Columbus Museum of Art probably come to mind. But hidden around the city and the surrounding metropolitan area are some lesser-known gems that offer unexpected and interesting experiences.

1. Central Ohio Fire Museum

When you arrive at the Central Ohio Fire Museum, you will be offered a guided tour. You can explore antique fire engines, old fire equipment and real artifacts used by firefighters throughout history. The museum is housed in a restored 1908 engine house in downtown Columbus!

The focus of this museum is on fire safety. There is a fire safety demonstration area and a play area for kids that includes a fire truck they can climb into with working lights, books and dress up opportunities!

2. Early Television Museum

The Early Television Museum houses TVs and video equipment from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Each room has an audio tour available if you’d like to learn more info! Don’t miss the back room with broadcasting equipment!

This is an eye-opening visit for younger kids who have grown up with screens in their pockets! The museum is near Center Street Market and the fountains at Hilliard’s Station Park.

3. The Doll Museum

  • Open Wednesday through Saturday
  • Admission required

Part of the Worthington Historical Society, The Doll Museum features a collection of dolls from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed inside the Old Rectory, the former rectory of St. John’s Episcopal Church, which includes a gift shop that is free to visit.

4. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame & Museum

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame & Museum’s purpose is to “collect, record, preserve and honor the events, motorcycles and people who define the spirit of motorcycling in America, and to educate people about that rich history.”

The museum has many displays that feature the careers of the Hall of Fame members. There are lots of historic motorcycles on display, including two that you can sit on!

5. Ohio Craft Museum

  • Address: 1665 W 5th Ave, Columbus, OH 43212

  • Open Monday through Saturday
  • Free to visit

Ohio Craft Museum is operated by Ohio Designer Craftsman and features rotating exhibits and three pretty amazing gift shops! The museum features fine craft artists in Ohio and it’s free to visit. They also offer classes and educational programming for all ages at the museum!
